Position Overview

The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Operations Research (OR). The appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The department seeks an exceptional scholar with expertise in optimization, stochastic modeling, simulation, machine learning, or artificial intelligence. Candidates should demonstrate strong methodological research capabilities and a clear vision for advancing the field of Operations Research.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a closely related discipline (completed or near completion at the time of appointment).

  • Demonstrated potential for high-impact research and effective teaching.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Requirements by Rank:

  • Assistant Professor: Demonstrated potential in research and teaching with evidence of scholarly growth.

  • Associate Professor: Established reputation and record of scholarly or professional achievement.

  • Full Professor: Significant record of research excellence, leadership, and contribution to the field.


Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an innovative and externally funded research program in Operations Research or related areas.

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research.

  • Mentor graduate students and supervise research projects.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams within and across Penn State.

  • Contribute to departmental, college, and university service.

About the Department

Founded in 1908 as the first Industrial Engineering program in the world, Penn State’s IME Department continues to lead globally in education, innovation, and research.

With 30 faculty, 10 staff members, 400 undergraduate, and 200 graduate students, the department supports diverse research areas such as:

  • Additive manufacturing

  • Human factors engineering in transportation and healthcare

  • Supply chain and service systems engineering

  • Healthcare systems engineering

IME offers B.S., M.S., M.Eng., and Ph.D. programs, as well as dual graduate degrees in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research. Both undergraduate and graduate programs consistently rank among the nation’s top in U.S. News & World Report.
