Position Overview
The Department of Allied and Population Health at South Dakota State University (SDState) invites applications for a full-time, benefit-eligible Clinical Instructor position in Respiratory Care.
We seek an experienced respiratory therapist and educator to join our interdisciplinary faculty team. The department includes programs in public health, pharmacy, medical laboratory sciences, and respiratory care—creating a collaborative environment dedicated to excellence in education, research, and community health.
This position emphasizes teaching, clinical practice, and student mentorship within South Dakota’s top healthcare systems, including Sanford USD Medical Center, Avera McKennan Hospital, and Monument Health.
Key Responsibilities

Teach clinical, laboratory, and lecture courses per program objectives and accreditation standards (CoARC, NBRC).

Supervise respiratory care students during clinical rotations.

Perform and oversee respiratory care services and instructional activities.

Maintain accurate student performance and progress records.

Manage instructional equipment and supplies.

Promote excellence in teaching, professionalism, and ethical conduct.

Maintain membership and engagement in the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC).

Participate in professional development and community outreach.

Collaborate with faculty and clinical affiliates to ensure student success.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Master’s degree in respiratory care or a related field; or Bachelor’s degree plus three (3) years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).

Valid RRT credential and current (or eligible) South Dakota licensure.

Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Demonstrated teamwork and leadership within healthcare settings.

Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days) and willingness to travel.
Preferred Qualifications

Minimum two (2) years teaching experience in an accredited respiratory care program.

Minimum four (4) years as an RRT, including two years in clinical practice.

Formal teaching training and experience with in-person and online instruction.

Proven ability to make independent decisions and handle complex situations effectively.

Starting Salary: $83,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience).

About the Department
The Allied and Population Health Department in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions offers nine academic programs and houses South Dakota’s only CoARC-accredited Respiratory Care Program.
Faculty and students benefit from strong clinical partnerships with Monument Health, Sanford Health, and Avera Health. The department also leads community-based health research through the Community Practice Innovations Center (CPIC).
