Position Highlights

The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will play a leading role in the newly initiated Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Medium-Band (MB) Survey.

The HSC/MB filters cover the 400–1000 nm range across 16 bands (R~20) and will be used for a major three-tier survey (wide, deep, ultradeep) over the coming years. This large-scale international collaboration—featuring teams from Euclid and DESI2—is led by a group in Japan, with UA/SO serving as a major partner contributing the four reddest MB filters.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Eiichi Egami and take a central role in all aspects of the survey. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in imaging data-processing pipeline development. Candidates working in cosmology or high-redshift galaxies are especially encouraged to apply and will have opportunities to design and lead science programs in collaboration with team members at UA/SO (Behroozi, Eifler, Fan, Krause, Rozo) and NOIRLab (Dey).

This appointment is initially for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. Candidates must have completed all Ph.D. requirements before beginning the position. The HSC/MB survey is expected to start in Spring 2026, and preference will be given to applicants who can begin early in 2026.

Research Environment

UA/SO provides a world-class environment in astronomy and astrophysics, offering direct access to premier observational and computational facilities, including:

  • Large Binocular Telescope (2x8.4m)

  • 6.5m MMT Telescope

  • 6.5m Magellan Telescopes

The University of Arizona is also a full member of the SDSS-V, DESI, and LSST collaborations.

  • Lead and contribute to all aspects of the Subaru HSC MB Survey, including:

    • Planning and executing observations

    • Developing data-processing and analysis pipelines

    • Conducting follow-up observations using ground- and space-based telescopes

    • Publishing scientific results

  • Collaborate on and lead science programs in partnership with UA/SO and NOIRLab researchers.
