Position Summary

The IU Indianapolis Department of Biology seeks applications from tenured faculty members, preferably at the Full Professor rank, for the position of Chair of the Department of Biology.
The Chair will provide visionary and strategic leadership to advance the Department’s academic excellence, research reputation, and community engagement.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to the Department of Biology.

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision aligned with the School of Science (SoS) and IU Indianapolis goals.

  • Lead recruitment, retention, and development of faculty, staff, and students.

  • Manage departmental budgets, ensuring financial balance.

  • Contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching, curriculum modernization, and program development.

  • Strengthen the Department’s research funding and reputation through external grants and collaborations.

  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration across the SoS and IU Indianapolis.

  • Demonstrate effective strategic planning, consensus building, and innovation.

  • Engage in alumni relations and fundraising activities.

  • Support outreach initiatives with the Indianapolis community and K–12 institutions.


Basic Qualifications

  • Tenured faculty member at IU Indianapolis.

  • Internationally recognized scholar in any sub-discipline of Biology, with a strong record of publications, citations, and research funding.

  • Demonstrated leadership and service to the department and the School of Science.

  • Proven success in teaching, research, and creative activities.

  • Commitment to broadening participation in science and fostering inclusivity.
