Position Summary

Union College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Environmental Biology and Public Health, beginning September 1, 2026.

Review of applications will begin after December 31, 2025, with priority consideration for applications received by that date.

We seek a candidate whose research explores the interaction between biological systems and the environment as it relates to epidemiology and/or public health. Possible areas of focus include host-vector biology, microbiomes, infectious disease transmission, genetic epidemiology, and environmental effects on pathogenesis.

Candidates utilizing field-based, wet-lab, genomics, and/or computational approaches are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field, with preference given to those having postdoctoral experience in research or teaching.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an independent research program that includes undergraduate participation.

  • Teach within the Department of Biological Sciences, including introductory biology courses and upper-level classes in your area of expertise.

  • Contribute to the Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering programs.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to inclusive teaching, student mentoring, and diversity.


About the Department

The Department of Biological Sciences at Union College emphasizes teaching, mentoring, and active research. Faculty collaborate across multiple interdisciplinary programs, including Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Science and Policy, Environmental Engineering, and Nanoscience.

The department is housed in the Integrated Science and Engineering Complex and equipped with state-of-the-art research instrumentation such as:

  • Confocal and electron microscopes

  • Illumina DNA sequencer

  • MicroCT and 3-D motion analysis system

  • Growth chambers, greenhouse space, and animal care facilities

Nearby field sites include the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, Mohawk River, and local lakes and urban areas, ideal for environmental and ecological research.
