Position Overview

Pittsburg State University invites applications for the position of Chair (Rank TBD) in the Department of Biology. The Chair serves as the chief administrative officer of the department and provides leadership in academic, personnel, facility, and financial matters. This position ensures departmental operations align with the missions and goals of the University, College, and Department.

This administrative assignment is at the pleasure of the President.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative Leadership (45%)

  • Manage departmental operations, including faculty appointments, promotions, tenure, evaluations, and salary decisions.

  • Lead the development and assessment of curriculum and academic programs.

  • Develop course schedules, assign teaching loads, and conduct departmental meetings.

  • Coordinate accreditation, assessment, and long-term strategic planning.

  • Provide mentoring and professional development support for faculty and staff.

  • Supervise administrative personnel and conduct performance reviews.

  • Manage departmental budgets, grants, and special funds for scholarships, travel, and operations.

  • Oversee departmental facilities and collaborate with the physical plant on space and equipment needs.

  • Promote community engagement, alumni relations, and fundraising activities with the PSU Foundation.

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the department and university administration.

  • Foster a collegial and inclusive departmental culture while addressing concerns from students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Teaching (25%)

  • Teach courses in biology as determined by departmental needs and in consultation with the Dean.

  • Contribute to program planning, instruction, assessment, and student advisement.

Service (15%)

  • Engage in institutional, professional, and community service in accordance with annual performance plans.

Scholarly Activity (10%)

  • Maintain an active program of research, scholarship, or creative work aligned with departmental goals.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support the mission of the department and university.


Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Biology or a related field.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in college-level teaching, scholarship, and service.

  • Demonstrated academic leadership and administrative experience.

  • Eligible for appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level at PSU.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational communication skills.

Note: The terminal degree requirement ensures compliance with accreditation standards and confirms advanced expertise in the discipline.


Appointment Details

  • Job Type: Unclassified

  • Appointment Duration: 12-month fiscal year

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience

  • Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
