Position Overview
The University of Florida (UF) is seeking a highly qualified Biological Scientist III to join the Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) in Homestead. The successful candidate will develop and conduct molecular research related to the identification and quantification of insects, mites, and microorganismsâparticularly invasive species affecting fruit crops, ornamentals, and natural ecosystems.
This position also involves collaboration with other professionals, research dissemination, lab management, and staff training.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement protocols for molecular identification and quantification of insects, mites, and associated microorganisms.

Design, conduct, and evaluate laboratory and field experiments focused on invasive species and vectors of plant pathogens.

Collaborate with cross-disciplinary professionals to analyze problems and recommend science-based solutions.

Manage laboratory colonies of arthropods and associated microorganisms; troubleshoot lab equipment as needed.

Train students and staff in molecular techniques and lab equipment usage.

Supervise and guide staff in data collection and research best practices.

Prepare and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, reports, and extension materials.

Present research outcomes at national and international scientific meetings and grower conferences.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelorâs degree in Biology or a related field with seven (7) years of experience,
OR -
Masterâs degree in Biology or a related field with five (5) years of experience,
OR -
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Biology or a related field with two (2) years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Ph.D. in Biological Sciences.

Knowledge of tropical fruit crops, horticulture, and statistical analysis.

Demonstrated experience with arthropod vectors of plant pathogens, supported by publications.

Proficiency in molecular biology techniques and microbiology.

Experience with mite-transmitted viruses.
Expected Salary
$53,000 â $86,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience.
