Position Overview

The Department of Biology and the North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invite applications for a joint position as Director of the UNC Herbarium and Associate Professor in Biology. This role bridges both NCBG and BIOL, advancing the missions of research, education, and biodiversity conservation.


Herbarium Director Responsibilities

  • Oversee all operations of the UNC Herbarium, including plant authentication, collection management, and staff supervision.

  • Develop and manage budgets, strategic plans, and outreach programs.

  • Lead the Garden’s Plant Biodiversity Research Program and contribute to conservation initiatives in North Carolina and the Southeastern U.S.

  • Serve on the NCBG executive leadership team and participate in public engagement activities.


Associate Professor Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in plant taxonomy, ecology, evolution, conservation, or systematics, focusing on the flora and ecosystems of the Southeastern U.S.

  • Teach at least one undergraduate course annually in botany, ecology, conservation, or a related field.

  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Secure external research funding and maintain an active research portfolio.

  • Contribute to departmental service and outreach.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Botany, Conservation, Ecology, Plant Systematics, or a related discipline.

  • Demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and mentoring.

  • Ability to develop and sustain an externally funded research program.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Southeastern U.S. flora.

  • Proven administrative leadership and outreach experience.

  • Success in securing and managing external funding.
