The Mellon College of Science (MCS) includes four departments and several interdisciplinary programs and research centers. Faculty at MCS are internationally acclaimed for their work in fields such as polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience. The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) is a summer enrichment program designed to support dedicated Pennsylvania high school students and inspire them to pursue STEM careers. The program offers rigorous instruction in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science, emphasizing teamwork, hands-on learning, and research-based projects.
CMU is seeking a Lab Technician to support the PGSS 2026 program. The selected candidate will work with the program director, chemistry faculty, and the Chemistry Teaching Lab Team to prepare materials for labs and team projects, maintain a safe and organized workspace, and assist students during sessions.
PGSS 2026 Program Dates

Student Arrival & Opening Ceremony: Sunday, June 21, 2026

Scientific Symposium: Thursday–Friday, July 23–24, 2026

Closing Ceremony: Friday, July 24, 2026
Core Responsibilities
-
Coordinate with program faculty and Teaching Lab staff to prepare materials for labs and team projects.

Prepare reagents and supplies ahead of scheduled sessions (held MTRF, 2:30–5:30 PM).

Safely store reagents and materials at the end of each session.

Record and document any glassware breakage.

Provide on-site support during lab and team project sessions.

Assist with setup for PGSS program events, including the Opening Ceremony, Scientific Symposium, and Closing Ceremony.
Qualifications
-
Strong academic record.
-
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
-
Completion of sophomore, junior, or senior year in an undergraduate chemistry program.

Demonstrated experience with chemical safety and laboratory best practices.

A combination of education and related experience may be considered.
Requirements

Successful background check.

PA Child Protection Clearances (Act 153).
