Position Summary

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Syracuse University seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to assist in the management of the Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory and perform research in noble gas geochemistry. This is a fully funded, one-year, full-time position with the possibility of renewal. The candidate is expected to work on-campus.

The Noble Gas Geochemistry laboratory features two state-of-the-art noble gas mass spectrometers (Helix SFT and Argus VI) and two extraction/purification lines for fluids and rocks. The lab can analyze the full suite of noble gases in gas, water, and rock samples. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct experimental work in groundwater, natural gas, and rock samples, collaborate with faculty on research projects, and may participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching.


Responsibilities

  • Operate and troubleshoot noble gas mass spectrometers

  • Build computational models of noble gas geochemistry results

  • Communicate research findings through talks, posters, and journal articles

  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students

  • Purchase lab supplies, participate in literature discussions, and contribute to proposal writing

  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in geochemistry or a related field before starting the position

  • Demonstrated potential for research excellence, evidenced by publications or significant research accomplishments

  • Experience with noble gas (or gas source) mass spectrometry, ultrahigh vacuum systems, LabVIEW or Python, and Qtegra

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Knowledge of noble gas analysis procedures preferred but not required

  • Comfortable working in diverse programming environments and developing new methodologies
