Job Summary
This temporary position provides Supplemental Instruction (SI) for Introduction to Chemistry students. SI is an academic support program designed to help students succeed in traditionally difficult courses. SI Leaders facilitate regularly scheduled study sessions where students compare notes, discuss course materials, practice problem solving, and prepare for exams.
Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated competence (at least an A-) in CHEM 102, Introduction to Chemistry, or a comparable course

Completed the equivalent of two years of college coursework

Strong foundation in chemistry

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Tutoring experience
Preferred Qualifications

BS/BA in Chemistry or a related field

Experience in Supplemental Instruction

Teaching experience
Key Responsibilities
-
Attend training before the semester and all scheduled class sessions
-
Plan for and hold two one-hour SI sessions per week
-
Hold three office hours weekly to support students and session planning
-
Meet weekly with the course instructor to ensure SI session accuracy and relevance

Meet weekly with the SI Manager to assess and improve SI sessions using continuous improvement protocols

Take notes and complete all course assignments and readings

Advertise SI sessions to students

Take attendance and report weekly to the instructor; submit semester attendance to SI Manager

Use session planning forms to prepare organized and effective SI sessions
-
Create a supportive learning environment and teach study skills using collaborative learning techniques

Administer and record data for SI evaluation surveys

Mentor and advise students, referring them to additional college support services when needed

Attend regular training sessions provided by college staff

Provide additional services during office hours at the Student Success Center

Perform any other duties as assigned
