About the Department
The Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) has served Indiana since 1837, providing geological research, information, educational outreach, and maintaining geological collections. It became part of Indiana University in 1993, and in 2022, the state legislature established the IGWS Center for Water and Center for Energy to support long-term studies of Indiana’s natural resources.
Position Overview
The GIS and Cartographic Specialist is responsible for producing professional maps, GIS analyses, figures, and GIS databases. The role requires maintaining cartographic standards, managing ArcGIS Online/Portal content, and supporting earth and water science disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
Department-Specific Tasks

Create published maps, GIS analyses, and standardized cartographic products.

Manage web maps via ArcGIS platforms (ArcGIS Online/Portal).

Provide GIS data management, cartographic and graphic design assistance.

Offer GIS software training and technical support to staff.

Act as primary contact for USGS Geologic Map Schema (GeMS).

Develop FGDC-compliant metadata for datasets.
-
Produce complex geologic and interactive maps using ArcGIS Desktop suite and Adobe Creative Cloud.

Develop Python scripts and geoprocessing models for spatial data automation.

Use SQL to extract data from enterprise SDE GIS databases.

Support staff in developing graphics, figures, presentations, posters, and templates.

Review final map outputs for accuracy and consistency.

Participate in conferences, training, and internal committees.
General Responsibilities

Conduct complex GIS data analysis and modeling.

Manage and maintain GIS datasets ensuring quality control.

Assist stakeholders with GIS data requests and reporting.

Provide training when required.

Ensure accurate documentation of GIS data and workflows.
Qualifications
Required
Education:
-
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geology, information/data science, or a related scientific field.
Experience:
-
Minimum 2 years in research data management and GIS analysis.
Licenses:
-
Valid driver’s license (must qualify for IU insurance upon hire).
Skills:
-
Strong knowledge of ArcGIS desktop software and SQL databases.

Programming/scripting proficiency.
-
Excellent communication, accuracy, professionalism, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
-
Master’s degree in GIScience, geography, environmental studies, or a related field.

Experience with GPS devices (e.g., Trimble), geological mapping, and GeMS database creation.

Advanced proficiency with Esri ArcGIS suite and Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat).

Knowledge of printing standards (RGB/CMYK).
