Position Summary
The Lead Librarian for Academic Engagement will play a key role in shaping the academic and social experience of students at Southern Virginia University. This position extends beyond traditional library responsibilities by focusing on instruction, research support, community engagement, and academic programming. The successful candidate will provide advanced research assistance and deliver dynamic instructional sessions, while also creating initiatives that cultivate intellectual curiosity, connection, and a sense of belonging.
A core objective of the role is to support student retention by ensuring that the library serves as a central hub for learning, collaboration, and growth.
Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Research Services

Create and deliver engaging information literacy instruction across disciplines.

Provide expert research guidance to students and faculty.

Community Engagement & Programming
-
Develop and implement innovative programs and events that promote information literacy, effective use of AI, and scholarly exploration.

Foster community building through library-led initiatives.

Student Success & Retention
-
Collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate library services into the academic curriculum.

Design opportunities that help students build scholarly identity and feel connected to the campus.

Outreach & Collaboration

Act as a liaison to academic departments and student groups, ensuring services address evolving campus needs.

Supervision of Student Library Aides

Train and manage student aides supporting reference services and peer-level program assistance.

Required Qualifications
-
Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution.
-
Experience in academic libraries with emphasis on instruction, reference services, and outreach.

Proven ability to develop and execute creative programming.
-
Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.

Strong passion for mentoring and supporting university students.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with integrated library systems (ILS) and library technologies.

Knowledge of library marketing and promotional strategies.

Background in assessing library services and programming.
