Position Overview

The University of Kansas seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor in Algebra and/or Combinatorics in the Department of Mathematics, beginning August 18, 2026. This is a non-tenure-track, limited-term, full-time appointment for three consecutive academic years, ending May 16, 2029.

The faculty member will:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.

  • Conduct research in algebra and/or combinatorics, leading to publication.

  • Engage in departmental and professional service.

Ph.D., ABD, or terminal degree is expected by the start date. Candidates must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the appointment.


Department and University

The KU Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and strong graduate programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. The department supports interdisciplinary research in areas including algebra, combinatorics, analysis, geometry, probability, statistics, PDEs, topology, and more.

KU is a major public research and teaching institution, part of a multi-campus system. Founded in 1865, it is a Carnegie comprehensive doctoral and research university and one of 38 public members of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The university enrolls over 28,000 students.

Lawrence, Kansas, a city of approximately 97,600, offers cultural opportunities, beautiful scenery, and a vibrant university community. It is 35 miles west of Kansas City and 20 miles east of Topeka.


Job Duties

50% Research:

  • Develop and maintain an active research program beyond the Ph.D. thesis.

  • Demonstrate evidence of a career-long commitment to scholarship.

40% Teaching/Advising:

  • Teach up to six credit hours per semester (undergraduate or graduate).

  • Prepare lessons, assignments, and assessments.

  • Maintain at least three office hours per week across two or more days.

  • Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

10% Service:

  • Participate in professional activities such as panels, workshops, and journal reviews.


Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or ABD in Mathematics by August 18, 2026.

  • Research expertise in algebra and/or combinatorics.

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.

  • Demonstrated commitment to research excellence.
