Position: Assistant Professor (Clinical Health Sciences Track)


Position Summary

The Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a Clinical MRI Physicist to join the department’s team of MRI physicists. This position combines clinical service, research, and teaching responsibilities. Work is performed onsite at a designated campus location.

Appointments may be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level on the Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track, depending on qualifications and experience.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical MRI Physics (60–80%):

  • Provide technical support and oversight for MRI procedures requiring physics monitoring, including off-label and novel methods

  • Establish and maintain institutional MRI policies and guidelines

  • Customize MR hardware/software within regulatory and institutional guidelines

  • Troubleshoot clinical MRI issues, coordinate with vendors, and maintain QA/QC of MRI equipment

  • Assist with new MRI equipment purchases, perform acceptance testing, and support accreditation requirements

  • Develop clinical and research MR imaging protocols

  • Support other department directives as assigned

Research MRI Physics (10–30%):

  • Support research activities of MRI investigators

  • Develop tools and infrastructure for departmental and core MRI research

  • Contribute to or lead grant applications for independent MRI research

  • Conduct collaborative MRI research with faculty, industrial partners, and other departments

  • Present research at conferences and publish results in scientific journals

  • Mentor graduate students, post-docs, and scientists

Teaching Responsibilities (≈10%):

  • Serve as an institutional subject matter expert in MRI physics

  • Educate clinical and research staff, trainees, and external audiences on MRI principles

  • Deliver lectures at national and international meetings


Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Physics, Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field

  • Completion of a Diagnostic Imaging Physics Residency, or ≥2 years post-PhD experience in Clinical MRI Physics or equivalent research/industry experience

  • Training or experience in QA/QC of MR equipment, including maintaining accreditation


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in MRI Physics by ABMP, ABR, or equivalent

  • Minimum 2 years post-PhD experience conducting MRI QA/QC

  • Excellent communication skills for interaction with technologists, radiologists, residents, and researchers

  • Experience in writing or assisting in writing grant proposals

  • Experience with administrative and committee work to support the CHS faculty mission
