Position Overview

The University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics with a focus on Data Science, starting in Academic Year 2026–2027. The position will remain open until filled, with priority given to applications received by January 5, 2026.

URI is a public R1 research university with approximately 17,000 students. The main campus is located in Kingston, Rhode Island, near major coastal areas and within convenient access to Providence, Boston, and New York.


Key Responsibilities

  • Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and data science.

  • Support the development of the data science programs.

  • Maintain an active research agenda.

  • Pursue external funding opportunities.

  • Advise and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Participate in service activities and provide consulting support to students and faculty within the Department, College, and University.


Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, data science, or a closely related discipline (degree must be earned before 31 August 2026).

  2. Demonstrated ability to conduct academic research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

  3. Ability and interest in teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in statistics and data science.

  4. Potential to develop and maintain a collaborative, externally funded research program.

  5. Strong interpersonal communication skills.

  6. Excellent command of written and spoken English.

  7. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and populations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Research interests in areas such as computational statistics, machine learning-based statistical methods, large language models (LLMs), reinforcement learning (RL), analysis of large datasets, data-centric AI, and image analysis.

  • Experience in curriculum development at undergraduate or graduate levels.

  • Experience advising or mentoring students.

  • Interest in developing collaborative research or consulting to support interdisciplinary programs across the Department and the University.

  • Willingness to engage in service and outreach activities.

  • Ability to support the recruitment and retention of students.
