Position Overview

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Mathematics Education starting Fall 2026, based on the Brownsville campus.

Candidates should demonstrate strong research potential in any area of Mathematics Education. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain an independent and productive research program with potential for external funding.

  • Contribute actively to departmental and academic program growth.

  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Engage in mentorship, collaboration, and service aligned with UTRGV’s mission.

  • SMSS includes 40+ tenure/tenure-track faculty, with active research in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education.

  • The department offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications.

  • Over 100 graduate students and 280 undergraduate majors are enrolled.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or closely related field from an accredited university.

  • At least 18 graduate credit hours in mathematics.

  • Ph.D. candidates may be considered if the degree is completed prior to start date.


Required Discipline-Specific Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in mathematics content.

  • Demonstrated potential for independent research and scholarly productivity in Mathematics Education.

  • Demonstrated potential for effective teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research experience.

  • Evidence of active research with potential for high-quality journal publications.

  • Demonstrated potential to secure external research funding.

  • Experience using technology, innovative pedagogy, or evidence-based instructional practices.
