Position Title

Flight Instructor – Aviation Program

General Description

The Flight Instructor position at Delaware State University (DSU) Aviation Program is a full-time faculty role responsible for providing flight, simulator, and ground instruction in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Parts 141 and 61.

Essential Functions

  • Perform flight instructor duties authorized by FAR in compliance with the approved Training Course Outline (TCO).

  • Provide instruction and monitor student progress; report delays or concerns to supervisor.

  • Maintain accurate student training records, logbooks, and computer records.

  • Ensure course standards, objectives, and training requirements are met by all assigned students.

  • Initiate stage check requests only when all flight lessons are complete.

  • Monitor training aircraft condition; report concerns to the Chief of Maintenance.

  • File incident reports for observed safety violations or unsafe conditions.

  • Attend required administrative, safety, review board, and standardization meetings.

  • Perform related instructional and administrative duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with projects such as TCO, FOM, and standardization rewrites.

  • Conduct facility tours and meet with prospective aviation students.

  • Represent DSU Aviation at recruiting events.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong aircraft piloting skills with ability to demonstrate required maneuvers.

  • Effective instructional techniques in both classroom and flight environments.

  • Knowledge of applicable FAA regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment while exercising sound judgment.

Qualification Standards

  • Current CFI-A (Certified Flight Instructor – Airplane).

  • Current Class III Medical Certificate.

  • Credentials meeting FAR Part 141.36 requirements for Private Pilot through Multi-Engine Instructor courses (CFI, CFII, MEI).

  • Preferred: Previous experience with Part 141 flight training.

Performance Standards

  • Demonstrated knowledge of DSU Fundamentals.

  • Average of 50 instructional hours per two-week pay period.

  • Maintain 80% pass rate for final review and stage checks.
