About the Job

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering at the University of Minnesota seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position (50% teaching / 50% research).

The position focuses on sensing and robotics in sustainable agriculture and environmental management, under the MnDRIVE initiative for Robotics, Sensing, and Advanced Manufacturing. MnDRIVE (Minnesota’s Discovery, Research, and Innovation Economy) aligns research strengths with state industries to address major challenges in robotics, global food, environment, brain conditions, and cancer clinical trials.

Responsibilities

Research

  • Develop an internationally recognized program in robotics and sensing systems for sustainable agriculture and environmental management.

  • Conduct research in areas such as water quality monitoring, UAV-based environmental inspection, precision irrigation, ecological sensing, and greenhouse gas measurement.

  • Collaborate with departments across the University, including Agricultural, Environmental, and Engineering disciplines.

Teaching

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering applications, sustainable agriculture, and resource management.

  • Potential course areas include Computer Applications, Pollution Control Engineering, and Ecological Engineering Principles.

  • Advise and mentor students; participate in robotics team activities and curriculum development.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. in engineering or science related to environmental, agricultural, or biological systems.

  • Demonstrated potential for independent research.

  • Strong written communication and teaching skills.

Preferred

  • Research or industrial experience in sensing or robotics (aerial or terrestrial).

  • Record of publications or relevant industry experience.

  • Experience in collaborative research and active-learning teaching methods.
